Migraine: an alternative approach

When I had lunch with Maika and Begonia last week, they both talked about a heavy migraine attack like they never had experienced before. While they discussed about different remedies like tea or pulverized seaweed, I thought about my home country, France, where people immediately take drugs when getting headaches. So I started some research finding out what really helps: an alternative approach.

Overuse of medication can sometimes lead to chronic headaches. An alternative approach can help to find the balance of life and avoid migraine attacks from the beginning.

Reasons for migraine attacks

According to the traditional Chinese medicine approach, the headache is a result of disturbance or imbalance of Yin Yang within the Zang-Fu organ system or the Channel system (Meridians), which are the two principal systems that regulate the functions of the body and mind.

The most common reason, which causes migraine headache, is a disharmony of the Liver system. This system normally regulates the flow of Qi (life energy) and stores the soul. A disharmony of the Liver system causes irregular Qi flow and blood stasis, and accumulates heat inside the body.

Both the Qi stagnation and the heat accumulation may result in migraine headache.

Another common reason is the dysfunction of the kidneys. According to the theory of the Five Elements, Water energy (Kidney) produces Wood energy  (Liver). The Kidney deficiency, caused by prolonged illness, may result in the Liver Yin deficiency and trigger headache.

Migraine headaches are also triggered by other external factors such as wind, damp heat and cold. Examining the nature of the headache usually helps to identify the factors causing the headache. For example, wind causes a moving headache (the location of the pain changes), damp results in a headache with heaviness and cold causes a headache that may get worse when the temperature drops.

What you can do: alternative treatments

Using Ice, biofeedback and relaxation can give the relief that is similar to the help from medications once an attack has started.

Biofeedback uses a monitor to train you to recognize the onset of muscle tension and changes in body temperature that are signals of stress. This technique can help you gain more control over normally involuntary functions like heart rate, skin temperature and blood pressure. The therapy is used to help prevent or treat conditions including migraine headaches but also chronic pain, incontinence, and high blood pressure (read more about Biofeedback)

Acupuncture, a form of Chinese medicine using very fine needles inserted in specific spots to balance the body’s energy flow. Acupuncture is based on 2500 years of Chinese medical tradition. Normally the therapist determines the specific acupuncture points for each specific patient, but a typical puncture site for migraines is the area between the thumb and forefinger, and the insides of the ankles.

Guasha, a technique of massage that involves repeatedly scrubbing the surface of the skin in certain parts of the body with a tortoiseshell, is used to bring deep blockages and toxins to the surface of the body before being released. It helps in this way to dredge the meridians, activates the blood flow and removes toxins. We self tested this massage at Kocoon spa and it really released the headache attack.

Shirodhara is an ancient ayurvedic technique, which calms the nervous system to prevent and relieve migraines. The treatment, which takes place with the client face-up on a massage table, consists of a continuous stream of warm sesame oil poured over the forehead and down the scalp, and induces a state of deep relaxation.

Butterbur contains petasin that is said to reduce inflammation and may thereby prevent the swelling that leads to migraine. You should check with your practitioner for the proper dosage, but don’t use butterbur if you’re pregnant or nursing.

Chinese herbal medicine is the core of traditional Chinese therapies for migraine headache and is very powerful to balance the body. It significantly reduces the pain, shortens the headache attacking time, reduces the frequency of the migraine and prevents the headache from happening. The duration of Chinese herbal treatment is usually 1-2 months and also depends on individual patient's condition.

Meditation and yoga can create a physiological reaction in the body that is the exact opposite of stress. Clinical studies have shown mindfulness meditation can be an effective treatment for chronic pain. Meditating also slows breathing rate, blood pressure and heart rate, which can help relieve migraine pain.

There is a big variety of alternatives to drugs. The best thing is to talk to you practitioner to see what is the best for you.

All those holistic remedies not only provide real prevention and relief, but also engender a sense of hope, comfort and freedom from migraine pain and an independence from drugs.

Migraine symptoms

Throbbing pain typically occurs on one side near the temples, forehead and eyes. Migraines can make you very sensitive to light, sound, or mild exertion, such as climbing the stairs. Many people have nausea, vomiting, or vision problems. The pain can be disabling, forcing people to miss work or other activities.

Migraine triggers

Flashing lights: reflection from snow or water or from fluorescent bulbs or television or movie screen. Wear sunglasses outside.

Anxiety and stress: emotional stress. Do some relaxation exercises, inhale and exhale slowly.

Lack of food or sleep: low blood sugar from skipping meals or eating too much sugar can trigger migraine. Drink water throughout the day or herbal tea.

Hormonal Changes: for many women, migraines are tied to their menstrual cycle

Food: avoid certain food, notably:

Foods high in tyramine: a substance found naturally in some foods like i.e. ages cheeses, smoked fish or some types of beer

Foods containing sulphites like ready meals, pizza or wine

Food containing nitrates like nuts or pressed meats

Recipe for Kocoon's After Meal Herbal Tea

This is the perfect herbal tea after a meal, or to fight insomnia! What you need:

Hawthorn (山楂 shānzhā) belongs to the family of roses and offer many health benefits such as promoting the health of the circulatory system and strengthening the heart, it is also an excellent digestion aid, full of antioxidants. Drink it to fight insomnia.

Chrysanthemum (菊花 júhuā) is a natural coolant, full of vitamins, it is known to boost the immune system and calm the nerves. Also a digestion aid, helps detoxification, and relieves sore throat and respiratory problems.

Pear (梨 lí ) contains a lot of antioxidant and thus is essential as a immune system booster. Rich in fiber and vitamins, it is also known for preventing and treating osteoporosis.

Rock Sugar (bīng táng) I personally don't like adding sugar as the fruits in the tea bring enough sweetness.

You will find the dried kind in Chinese big supermarkets.

1-Put 1/2 cup dried hawthorn in a pot, with slices of pear and a little bit of chrysanthemum flowers.

2-Optionally, you may add crystal sugar.

3-Pour boiling water.

NB: You can make several steeps (3-4) out of one preparation if you keep on pouring boiling water.

Microcosm of a macrocosm – how to live in accordance with nature

We tried it: Chinese Metaphysics Walk with Alex Tan 

After this incredible Thursday-morning walk with Alex, I was inspired, eager to live life to the full, and simply felt way better.

While walking around the Temple of Earth (地坛公园) and watching Chinese people doing their impressive morning fitness, Alex introduced us to Chinese Metaphysics, Traditional Chinese Medicine and the importance of living in accordance with nature.

‘We are a microcosm of a macrocosm” – The human being is just an inhabitant of the Earth, living among a vast variety of plants and animals. Living between the Earth and the Sky, in the Universe. The question is: How can we live in harmony with this macrocosm? What is the perfect environment to flourish?

First important thing: If we want to live in accordance with nature, we have to live in the rhythm of nature.

"We have the opportunity to maximize the benefits of each organ and channel system and the consequent benefits for health, both physical and emotional. For example, each morning, when the Qi is in the Metal and Earth element, you have a window of opportunity to start shaping your life. Metal is about embracing the new by letting go of old conditioning. Then as the day moves on into Earth energy at 7am, our focus shifts towards creating strength through nourishment and operating as a balanced individual in the ‘here-­and-now’. So, depending on what you do between 5:00 and 9:00am, you can either be passive, or you can take charge and shape the day ahead and your destiny. Raw caramel-nut-bars with chocolate and fresh fruits

My first intention was to do raw food blueberry muffins. I saw the recipe and it sounded great. Unfortunately the dough became sticky and it was impossible to form little muffins out of it. So I decided to add more nuts and raisins, some honey as well as one caramel and chocolate layer. For the freshness and some more vitamines I added fresh fruits. The result: Some delicous caramel nut bars with chocolate and fresh fruits!

 

The recipe:

 

First you need all nuts you like (I took one cup of each walnuts, cashews, and peanuts)

 

You put the half of it in a blender and mix it until it becomes a sticky mixture. Then you add the other half with a spoon and mix it (manually) so that the sticky dough becomes a great nut dough.

 

Now you can add dried fruits which you have to chop up first. I took dates and raisins. Then you add a little pinch of himalayan salt, some honey and cinnamon (as you like). Before eating everything you should quickly press the crust into a plate and put it in the refridgerator.

 

For the Caramel I took some salted butter, which I melt together with sugar in a little pot. When the sugar gets the typical caramel color and there are no pieces left you can take the pot from the stove and put it over one side of the nuts mixture. Put it again in the fridge.

 

Last and very important thing: the chocolate. You can melt it eather in a bain-marie (you need some patience) or just for a minute into the microwave to melten it.

 

When the caramel-nut bars dried, you can turn them onto the caramel side, so that you can put the chocolate on the other side. If you like to add fruits too, you should slice them before putting the chocolate on it. When the chocolate is still liquid, you can put the fruits on. Now you just have to put it in the fridge and wait for the chocolate to cool and voilà! Easy recipe for delicious, healthy home-made nutbars!

Lacto- Fermented Mint Chutney

This recipe is from sally fallon’s nourishing traditions.

Makes three cups

2 c fresh mint leaves
1 medium onion, peeled and coarsely chopped
4 cloves garlic, peeled and coarsely chopped
4 jalapeno chilies, seeded and chopped
2 T cumin seeds, toasted
2/3 c almonds, chopped
1 T sea salt
4 T whey
1 c filtered water

Place all ingredients except salt, whey, and water into food processor and pulse until finely chopped but not paste-like. place in a quart-sized, wide-mouth glass container (mason jar, etc) and press down tightly. mix salt and whey with water and pour into jar, adding more water if necessary to cover chutney. top of the chutney should be at least 1 inch below top of jar. cover tightly and store at room temperature for two days before transferring to fridge. this should be eaten within two months.

I did not have whey so I replaced whey by sea salt. It made the mixture too salty, thus I added half cup of mint and almond. After 3-4 weeks of fermentation, it was perfect! i love to put it on chicken, split pea soup, or black beans
